Thailand Eyes Legalization of Casinos and Online Gambling
The Thai government is exploring the possibility of legalizing casinos and online gambling as part of a major economic reform. A parliamentary committee recently submitted a proposal recommending the establishment of integrated resorts with casinos in key tourist destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.
The proposal also includes plans to regulate online gambling to curb illegal activities and boost state revenue. Advocates argue that legalization could generate billions of baht annually and create thousands of jobs. However, opposition from religious and social groups remains a significant hurdle.
The government has stated that any reforms will prioritize responsible gambling and public safety. A final decision is expected in 2025, following extensive public consultations.
